The Importance of Fathers: Evidence and Theory from Social Science

We start with assumption that all the developed countries, not just those in Western Societies but also Japan and others such as Russia, are in a kind of cultural crisis. This cultural crisis, although showing somewhat different features in each country, is centered on major family problems. For example, in the USA the high divorce rate and high crime rates for young men are commonly acknowledged as extremely serious. In Europe and Japan the lack of children is probably the central aspect of the crisis. A large increase in single parent families and high co-habitation and low marriage rates are three other often noted indices of the crisis. Along with these problems there has been a great increase in sexual promiscuity, in sexually transmitted diseases and in openly supported sexual behaviors that were once uncommon and previously understood as deviant.  [Continued...]

Why the US Should Not Ratify the CRC

In what may be the greatest assault ever on parental rights in America, liberal leaders are pushing for Senate ratification of a United Nations treaty called the Convention on the Rights of the Child, or CRC. If ratified, it would:

• radically encroach on our sovereignty;

• subject us to an independent UN committee of “experts” in Geneva;

• allow the government in all cases to determine what is in a child’s best interest;

• intrude on parents’ rights to teach values and faith; and

• grant to children autonomous rights, which many believe would include access to controversial sexual information and even abortion.

To protect children is a noble aim, and the UN...  [Continued...]
