Dear Friend — The United Nations has a “Human Rights Committee” in order to, “promote and protect human rights for all.” This includes our most vulnerable citizens such as those with disabilities. That is why it was so shocking to see a Commissioner, Ben Achour, strongly suggest that innocent children with Down Syndrome must be aborted before birth:
“If you tell a woman ‘Your child has Dow…what is it called? Down syndrome, dawn syndrome – if you tell her that, isn’t it, or that he may have a handicap forever, for the rest of his life, you should make this woman… it should be possible for her to resort to abortion to avoid the handicap as a preventive measure,” Achour said. He later followed up with the statement, “we must do everything we can to avoid disabilities.”
Mr. Achour is expressing a barbaric policy consistent with eugenics, the intentional killing of those considered to be in some way “inferior” to the rest of the population. He sits alongside the despicable eugenics advocate Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, who advocated the forced sterilization and segregation of those with mental and physical disabilities, and who sought, “to eradicate the Negro population.” (Those are her actual words, quoted from a letter she wrote to the Ku Klux Klan, according to prominent theologian John J. Conley, SJ.)
The International Organization for the Family (IOF) is joining with our friends at the Jerome Lejeune Foundation USA in demanding that Mr. Achour issue an immediate apology for his remarks, and that the UN Human Rights Committee repudiate them.
Please sign the petition demanding the protection of human life under international law and the reaffirmation of the dignity of every person from conception to natural death. Thank you.
God Bless,
